Did you know that the typical American family will do 400 loads of laundry each year? This equates to eight loads per week, and it is definitely not cheap. The average laundry detergent costs up to 20 cents per load, which means that you are spending $80 each year on laundry detergent alone, not to mention the other costs associated with doing laundry. Whether washing modest prom dresses or shirts, finding a way to save money should be a top concern.

The fact is there are several ways that you can save big on your laundry costs and use that money for something else. Many of the larger modest clothing stores use some of these tactics to save a bit of money on their operating costs. Use the tips below to learn how you can save on your laundry bill.

Tip: Don’t use detergent.

You can save 100 percent of your laundry detergent costs if you have a modern, high efficiency washing machine. These machines clean your clothing by agitating them in the water. This is enough to clean any fabrics that are lightly soiled. Sonic Soak is the newest evolution in washing technology that utilizes ultrasonic technology to result in a deeper clean, saved time, water and energy,

Tip: Use homemade detergent.

When you find it is necessary to use detergent for your clothing, or if you need the additional peace of mind that your clothes are truly clean, consider using homemade detergent. This can be made with the following recipe:

  • 3 gallons of water;
  • ½ cup of washing soda;
  • One bar of soap;
  • One cup of Borax.

You will boil the water and grate the bar of soap with a cheese grater. The soap should be boiled until it is completely dissolved. You add the borax to the mixture as well as the washing soda.

Tip: Simply use less detergent.

If you are using store bought detergent you do not have to use the recommended amount. If you use less, the bottle will last longer and in most cases product the same results.

Tip: Wash less often.

If you wash less often, then your clothes will not look as worn nor will you use as much detergent. Keep in mind, if you only wear a piece of clothing for a few hours, there is really no need to wash it.

Tip: Purchase your detergent in bulk.

You can save a ton of money when you purchase your detergent from warehouse stores and save even more if you opt for the generic brand that is offered.

Tip: Only use cold water for your wash.

Did you know that 90 percent of the energy that is used to wash your clothes is from heating the water? You can wash everything in cold water, achieve the same results, and save huge on your utilities bill. If you don’t want to use only cold water, consider the hot/cold option, to at least save some of the cost.

These are just a few of the effective ways that you can cut down on your laundry costs and still have pristine results and clean clothes.
