When you spend most of your time rooted in the same place – working in an office, living in the same place – exploring the outdoors seems like a great escape. And what better way to do that than by overlanding? You can see a lot of beautiful sceneries, watch sunrises and sunsets, and camp under the stars.

What Is Overlanding?

While overlanding has been relatively present (albeit in different shapes) in the United States, it has only now seen quite a surge in popularity. People are trying to get off the busy roads of the city and connect with nature in a way that is most convenient for them.

Overlanding is practically a mix between off-roading and camping. It’s the perfect choice for those that like automotive activities and driving through certain areas – but at the same time, it is perfect for those that want to enjoy the outdoors. Plus, unlike traditional camping, overlanding involves going over a bigger distance – sometimes, you’ll be traveling for weeks.

Things You’ll Need When You’re Overlanding

When you are going on an overlanding trip, there are certain things that you will most definitely need. You’ll need basic gear – and then you’ll require the just-in-case gear. Since overlanding involves going over longer distances in your car, here are some tools that you might start with.

  • A Good Vehicle

When you are going overlanding, no law says you can’t take any car with you. However, to ensure that everything goes smoothly, it is still recommended that you invest in the right car. For example, a 4×4 vehicle would be able to handle the challenges of the road more efficiently in comparison to a 4×2 one. If you have a car that makes you feel concerned every time you enter a bumpy countryside road, then it certainly should not be taken overlanding.

  • Tools

Eventually, things might start to break. And the last thing you want is for them to break while you are in the middle of nowhere, with no one there to tow your car. This is why you need a complete tool kit, spare tires, and perhaps even a tire patch kit. A good truck winch may also help you out. It can save the day when the situation is dire.

  • Roof Racks

When you are overlanding, it’s clear that you’ll have to carry a lot of things with you. The chances are that not all of it will be able to fit in your trunk – so, you’ll have to make some space for it in other places. In this regard, you might want to invest in a roof rack, as it will help you increase your vehicle’s luggage and cargo capacity.

  • Camping Gear

Unless you are traveling in a van or an RV that already has the advantage of a bed, a kitchen, and perhaps a toilet, you will have to get appropriate camping gear as well. Focus on getting a good tent and sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, tarps, blankets, and other useful gear like this.

  • Foods

Food is also important to have on you when you go overlanding – particularly since you’ll be eating outdoors a lot. Canned food can be kept at “room temperature,” but for foods that go bad easily (e.g. fruits, veggies, fresh meat), you’ll want to get an ice cooler as well.

Final Thoughts

Overlanding is a relaxing activity to indulge in. However, the most important factor is to prepare with all the gear that you might need for comfort. Don’t overpack – but also don’t leave crucial gear at home to save space. Once you are on the road, simply choose a good route so that you may enjoy the scenery.
