Planning a DIY project can be fun – until you see the estimate. The good news is that there is plenty you can do to save money wisely when putting your project together. We will look at three (3) areas where you can save money and still have an outstanding result when your renovation is done.

Kitchen

A kitchen renovation can be one of the most expensive of the interior projects. People want all the bells and whistles, but cringe at the price, even if they can afford it.

Take countertops for example. Granite, marble and quartz are all very popular, but all three are going to be on the high end of your budget. So if you’re looking to save money, these choices might make your kitchen renovation fade into the background.

However, what people don’t realize is that a laminate countertop can be a great value for your renovation project.

For starters, it is very easy to clean. You don’t have to use harsh chemicals on it. Warm soap and water should be enough to clean it thoroughly. Bleach will not harm the finish either.

Laminate is also available in countless beautiful finishes and colors. Manufacturers possess technology that can even mimic stone finishes as well. The greater majority of customers who decided on laminate countertops have been very pleased with them.

Some may have the wrong notion that laminate won’t last long. It’s one-eighth of an inch thick so the idea is that it cannot take a beating. Nothing could be further from the truth. Laminate is very durable, resistant to both heat and scratches.

But best of all, laminate, with all its pluses, is the least expensive of them all. With it being easy to clean, available in many finishes, its durability and being the least expensive of countertop finishes make it an incredible value and a wise way to save money on your kitchen renovation.

Bathroom

You could go ahead and install your vanity, new stool and everything without hesitation. But if you are planning to save money, you might want to consider the following idea.

If you have any plumbing leaks, you better fix these first. It would also be wise to see if those leaks are headed for areas that the new fixtures could hide if not addressed.

On the subject plumbing, unless it is absolutely necessary to move it, keep it where it is. Moving plumbing is costly. So unless you are reconfiguring the entire layout of your bathroom, it wouldn’t be necessary to move it. Don’t waste the money.

Flooring

Flooring can be tricky, as each space has different needs. With the difference in needs, you will sure have differences in price as well. In high-traffic areas you will need something durable so you won’t have to replace it sooner than expected. In other areas with less traffic, a high-end product might not be necessary.

When you talk about saving money, you also want to think about what’s under your current flooring. A good contractor will double check the subfloor at tear out time to make sure it’s strong and level. If it’s not, they will make sure it is before the new flooring gets installed.

Why would they do this? If you leave an uneven or weak subfloor the way it is and then put new flooring over it, then your new flooring will have problems in the future. This could lead to more expense that could have been avoided if it were done right.
