Body painting is a form of body art. Unlike tattoo or other forms of body art, body painting is temporary, painted onto the human skin. Usually it lasts for several hours or at most a couple of weeks. Body painting existed in most of the tribalist cultures. Worn during ceremonies body painting still survives among the indigenous people of the Pacific Island, New Zeland, parts of Africa and Australia. Bodypainting known as Mehndi   (semi-permanent form of body painting) using dyes made of henna (“henna tattoo”) is still practiced in India and Middle East.

The bodypainting festivals are organized annually across the world, bringing together professional body painters from all over the world as well as keen amateurs. The biggest art event in this theme is the World Body Painting Festival in  Pörtschach (previously held in Seeboden) in Austria. During this festival thousands of visitors admire the incredible work of the participants. Body painting festivals that take place in North America include the North American Body Painting Championship, Face and Body Art International Convention in Orlando, Florida, Bodygras Body Painting Competition in Nanaimo, BC and the Face Painting and Body Art Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Enjoy this incredible and creative art from bodypainting festivals around the world.
